EV Charging Incentives in Utah

Which charger and EV incentives are still open, which ended and on what date, for homes and for businesses. Status checked October 4, 2026.

Many incentive lists are out of date. Several programs ended between September 2025 and June 2026, and some aggregator sites, including the federal AFDC laws database, still list them. Every status below was checked against the program owner's own page or tariff on October 4, 2026.

What EV charging incentives are available in Utah right now?

For homeowners, almost none on the charger itself. Rocky Mountain Power's residential charger rebate and the federal 30C charger credit have both ended, and so have the federal EV purchase credits. What remains is Rocky Mountain Power's rebate for business and multifamily chargers and its Wattsmart Drive bill credit. A state rebate program for business chargers is announced but not open.

Is there any incentive for a home charger?

Not for buying or installing one, if it goes in today. Rocky Mountain Power's $200 residential rebate ended January 1, 2026, and the federal 30C credit does not apply to chargers placed in service after June 30, 2026. Households can still earn Wattsmart Drive credits and save on energy with Rocky Mountain Power's time-of-use rate.

If your charger was in service by June 30, 2026, the 30C credit may still apply on your return. The IRS describes it for individuals as 30 percent of the cost, up to $1,000 per item, for a charger at your main home, located in an eligible census tract (low-income or non-urban), and placed in service from January 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026. It is claimed on Form 8911. Ask your tax professional whether your address and dates qualify.

Wattsmart Drive pays Rocky Mountain Power customers who let the utility pause charging during short demand events, up to 48 a year. It works through your car's manufacturer account, so any home charger works with it.

The time-of-use rate is a price, not a rebate, but it is the biggest ongoing saving for most home chargers. Off-peak energy on the Schedule 1 option is 6.6111¢ per kWh from October to May and 7.4705¢ in summer, against 29.7498¢ and 33.6173¢ from 6 to 10 p.m. on weekdays. Details and conditions are on our Rocky Mountain Power EV programs page.

What can businesses and multifamily properties get?

Rocky Mountain Power pays 75 percent of charger cost, up to $1,000 for a single-port Level 2 charger and $1,500 for a dual-port unit, with larger amounts for DC fast chargers. The charger must be on a meter that is not on a residential rate and bought on or after January 1, 2026. The federal 30C credit ended for businesses on the same June 30, 2026 date.

Rocky Mountain Power's page showed "over $1.5 million" in remaining funds on October 4, 2026, first-come, first-served. Site caps are $60,000 per dealership location and $200,000 per other location. Level 2 applications go in after installation, within one year of purchase; DC fast chargers need pre-approval before purchase.

The Utah Department of Environmental Quality has also posted an EV Charger Program with rebates that "may cover up to $7,000" for businesses, workplaces, multifamily properties, nonprofits, governments, public fleets, HOAs and property managers. On October 4, 2026, its application forms were listed as "To be announced." DEQ's older Workplace EV Charging grant is closed and out of funds. For project planning, see commercial EV charger installation and multifamily EV charging.

What happened to the federal EV tax credits?

They ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. That covers both the 30D credit for new clean vehicles and the 25E credit for used ones. The IRS treats a vehicle as acquired when a binding written contract is signed and a payment is made, so a car contracted and paid for on or before that date may still qualify if it was delivered later.

The IRS pages for both credits were last updated July 13, 2026. If you bought near the cutoff, keep the contract and payment records for your tax preparer.

Does Utah tax EV charging?

Yes, when charging is sold. Since January 1, 2024, Utah Code 59-30-102 has taxed electricity and subscriptions sold by a charging station operator at 12.5 percent. The statute defines a charging station as equipment that charges an electric vehicle "for a fee," so it targets businesses and property owners that sell charging to drivers. It is a tax on sales, not an incentive.

An operator that charges drivers by the kWh, by the hour or by subscription collects the tax, files on the same schedule as its sales and use tax, and gives each customer an itemized invoice showing the energy or time sold and the price. A business deciding whether to charge for workplace or tenant charging should talk to its tax professional. The pricing side is covered on workplace EV charging.

How do you check whether a program is still open?

  • Go to the program owner's page or tariff, not a list or a news article, and note the date it was last updated.
  • For Rocky Mountain Power business rebates, check the remaining-funds figure before you buy.
  • For federal credits, look at the placed-in-service or acquisition date, not the purchase date alone.
  • Keep the itemized invoice, the charger's specification sheet and installation photos; the Rocky Mountain Power business rebate asks for all three.

Utah EV incentive questions

Can I still claim the federal 30C credit for a home charger?

Only if the charger was placed in service by June 30, 2026. The IRS says the credit cannot be claimed for refueling property placed in service after that date. For an eligible home charger before the cutoff, it was 30 percent of cost up to $1,000, at your main home in an eligible census tract, claimed on Form 8911. Ask your tax professional.

Is the Rocky Mountain Power $200 home charger rebate still available?

No. The residential Level 2 charger rebate, 75 percent up to $200, was removed from Rocky Mountain Power's Schedule 120 effective January 1, 2026. Some websites, including the federal AFDC laws database, still list it. Schedule 120 now applies only to general service schedules, which means business, workplace and multifamily sites.

Does Utah have a state tax credit for home EV chargers?

We did not find one. A search of Utah Code and the State Tax Commission site turned up no state credit for charging equipment, and Utah's alternative fuel vehicle credit is written around vehicles and was not confirmed to cover chargers. If you see a state charger credit advertised, ask for the statute number and check it on le.utah.gov.

When will the Utah DEQ EV Charger Program open?

No date was posted on October 4, 2026; the application forms were listed as to be announced. The program describes rebates that may cover up to $7,000 for businesses, nonprofits, governments, public fleets, HOAs and property managers. Homeowners are not on the eligible list. Its funding source is not stated, so treat it as uncertain until it opens.

No rebate, but still worth doing right. Send your car model and a photo of your panel for a home charger quote.
