Tesla Cybertruck Home Charging in Ogden

One circuit decision covers two jobs: charging the truck every night and, if you want it later, letting the truck run the house in an outage.

How many amps does a Cybertruck charge at home?

Plan on 48 amps on a 60 amp circuit. Tesla's Cybertruck manual tells owners to make sure Wall Connectors are "configured for a 48A charge current" and warns that the truck cannot charge from a Gen 1 Wall Connector set above 48 amps. Tesla's Powershare system is also rated 48 amps (11.5 kW) through a Universal Wall Connector on a 60 amp breaker.

Tesla's onboard charger table lists Model S, 3, X and Y but not Cybertruck. Everything Tesla does publish points to 48 amps as the ceiling, and the touchscreen lightning bolt shows the maximum for your truck.

Tesla's April 2026 shareholder update still shows Cybertruck in production in Texas. The charge port sits above the driver's side rear wheel, so mount the charger on the side of the garage the truck's back corner lands on.

Can a Cybertruck live on a 120 volt outlet?

Not well. Tesla's manual says it does not recommend low-power equipment such as a 120 volt NEMA 5-15 outlet for Cybertruck, "especially in low ambient temperatures," because anything under 2 kW charges this battery very slowly. In an Ogden or Eden January, that can mean losing ground on a cold night. A 240 volt circuit is the realistic starting point.

Tesla's Gen 3 Mobile Connector draws 32 amps from a NEMA 14-50 on a 50 amp breaker, which is a reasonable budget option. In Utah, a receptacle installed for EV charging needs GFCI protection. Read Level 2 EV charger installation for the outlet versus hardwired trade-off.

A Universal Wall Connector, hardwired on a 60 amp circuit. It delivers 48 amps for daily charging, has a J1772 adapter for any other EV in the garage, and is the only Wall Connector Tesla's Powershare Gateway system accepts. Choosing it now keeps home backup open without replacing the charger later.

What does Powershare home backup require?

Without a Powerwall, Tesla requires a Powershare Gateway plus a Universal Wall Connector, with an optional Backup Switch. The Gateway sits between the utility feed and the backed-up loads, opens an islanding contactor when the grid fails, and the truck then feeds the house at up to 11.5 kW. With a Powerwall 3, Tesla says no Gateway is needed.

  • Gateway: 200 amp continuous rating, NEMA 3R, accepts a 100 to 200 amp service-entrance main breaker, and is commissioned in Tesla One.
  • Universal Wall Connector breaker: on the backup side, preferably inside the Gateway. 60 amps gives 48 amps of continuous backup; 50, 40 and 30 amp breakers give 40, 32 and 24; 20 and 15 amps are "Not recommended."
  • Backed-up loads: each must fit within that continuous capability, and motor loads are limited by a 110 amp locked-rotor start rating.
  • Solar: up to 11.5 kW AC can sit in the backup circuit so the truck can recharge during an outage.

Tesla's support page (March 2025 capture) listed eligibility as owning a single-family home or townhome, parking within 20 feet of the home or garage, a main panel rated under 225 amps, and a Tesla Certified Installer in your area. It named Qmerit as Tesla's national provider. Check current terms and Rocky Mountain Power's requirements before planning around them.

Tesla's installation manual states that a Powershare Gateway installation "must be carried out only by a competent electrician who is certified by Tesla." Ogden EV Charger Pros does not claim Tesla certification. We can install a Universal Wall Connector on a 60 amp circuit for charging now. If a Gateway is added later, Tesla wants that charger's breaker on the backup side, usually inside the Gateway, so the Tesla Certified Installer doing the Gateway will rework that connection.

How does Powershare change the panel and load picture?

It adds rules a normal charger install does not have. Tesla says that with a Powershare-capable truck and a Powershare system, the Wall Connector counts as a generation source, so total generation in a panel must not exceed 100 percent of the busbar rating. Tesla also disables Dynamic and Group Power Management on a Powershare Wall Connector and prohibits third-party load-shedding devices on it.

That last point matters if you hoped to use EV charger load management to avoid a panel upgrade: on a Powershare system, Tesla wants the Wall Connector connected directly to a breaker in the backup circuit, and it says a load calculation must set that breaker size. On a charging-only install, the 2023 NEC counts the charger at 7,200 watts or its nameplate, whichever is larger, and load management stays available. Load management is on the table before any panel upgrade is. The general process is on home EV charger installation.

The truck's bed has a 240 volt outlet rated 40 amps, and Tesla says all its outlets together supply up to 9.6 kW, enough to charge another EV. Those outlets switch off while the truck is backing up the house.

Tesla Cybertruck home charging questions

What home charger should I get for a Cybertruck?

A Tesla Universal Wall Connector on a 60 amp circuit covers both everyday charging at 48 amps and a future Powershare home backup system, which requires the Universal Wall Connector specifically. A Gen 3 Wall Connector also charges at 48 amps but is not part of the Powershare Gateway system.

Can I charge a Cybertruck from a regular 120 volt outlet?

It works, but Tesla's owner's manual says it does not recommend low-power equipment such as a 120 volt NEMA 5-15 outlet for Cybertruck, especially in cold weather. Equipment under 2 kW charges the large battery very slowly. A 240 volt circuit is the practical minimum.

What do I need for Powershare home backup?

For a home without a Powerwall, Tesla requires a Powershare Gateway and a Universal Wall Connector, with a Backup Switch optional. Tesla's manual says a Powerwall 3 system with a Universal or Gen 3 Wall Connector can provide vehicle-to-home backup without a Gateway, and that a Gateway must not be installed with a Powerwall.

Who can install a Powershare Gateway?

Tesla's Powershare installation manual says installation must be carried out only by a competent electrician who is certified by Tesla. Tesla's support page also listed a Tesla Certified Installer in your area as an eligibility requirement. Ogden EV Charger Pros does not claim Tesla certification.

How much power can a Cybertruck send to my house?

Tesla's manual gives a maximum draw of 11.5 kW. The Powershare system is rated 48 amps continuous with the Universal Wall Connector on its default 60 amp breaker. A smaller breaker lowers that: 40 amps continuous on 50, 32 on 40 and 24 on 30.
