What does a Tesla Wall Connector installation include?
A dedicated 240 volt circuit from your panel to the Wall Connector, a breaker and copper wire sized to the output you want, mounting at a height and spot Tesla's manual allows, commissioning in Tesla's installer app, Wi-Fi setup, power sharing if there are two units, and the permit and inspection your city requires.
This page is about the job. For the unit itself, Gen 3 versus Universal, cable length and the full breaker-to-output table, see the Tesla Wall Connector specs page. If you are still choosing between a Wall Connector and a 14-50 outlet, start with Tesla charger installation.
- Site survey: panel capacity, circuit route, mounting spot, Wi-Fi.
- Permit: applied for with Ogden City, South Ogden, North Ogden or Ogden Valley City.
- Circuit: breaker, wire and conduit from the panel to the wirebox.
- Mounting and termination: wirebox on the wall, conductors landed and torqued.
- Commissioning: breaker size, Wi-Fi, firmware and power sharing in Tesla One.
- Inspection: the city inspector checks the work.
What gets checked during the site survey?
Where the car parks and where its charge port sits, how far the cable has to reach, whether the panel can spare a 60 amp circuit or needs a smaller one, the route from panel to wall, and whether Wi-Fi reaches the spot. Each of those changes the price or the placement.
- Cable reach: Tesla says to mount where the cable reaches the charge port "without putting strain on the cable," with clearance for the cable to loop around the unit.
- Panel capacity: a load calculation shows whether 48 amps fits, or whether a lower setting or load management is the better answer.
- Route: drywall, attic, crawlspace, surface conduit, or a trench to a detached garage.
- Wi-Fi: Tesla's tip is simple. If a phone connects to your Wi-Fi at the mounting spot, the Wall Connector likely will too. Concrete, masonry and metal studs between the router and the unit weaken the signal.
A photo of your open panel and the parking spot lets an installer spot most of this before visiting.
How is the breaker and wire sized?
The breaker sets the output: 60 amps for the full 48, and smaller breakers for lower outputs, always at 80 percent of the breaker because EV charging is a continuous load. For 48 amps, Tesla calls for at least 6 AWG copper with a 75°C rated breaker, or 4 AWG with a 60°C rated breaker.
The wire must carry the breaker's rating, not just the charger's. That is why a 48 amp install on plastic-sheathed cable usually needs 4 AWG. Tesla's terminals accept 12 to 4 AWG copper only, and the manuals warn against Eaton BR breakers on aluminum panelboards, recommending Eaton BRH instead. The general sizing rule is explained in what size breaker for an EV charger.
No GFCI breaker, no disconnect. The Gen 3 has ground-fault protection built in, and Tesla's 2020 Gen 3 manual says not to install a GFCI breaker ahead of it. Tesla's current manuals call external disconnect switches "neither required nor recommended." At 48 amps the unit is below the NEC 625.43 threshold of 60 amps for a required disconnect.
How high is a Wall Connector mounted?
Tesla recommends about 45 inches. The allowed range runs up to 60 inches indoors or outdoors, down to 18 inches indoors and 24 inches outdoors. The unit goes on a flat, vertical surface, such as a wall or pedestal, that can carry its weight.
| Tesla mounting rule | Indoor | Outdoor |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum height | 60 in | 60 in |
| Recommended | about 45 in | about 45 in |
| Minimum height | 18 in | 24 in |
From Tesla's Gen 3 and Universal Wall Connector manuals. Heights are the same for both models.
The wiring can enter from the top, bottom or rear of the wirebox. Tesla's default conduit size is 3/4 inch, with 1 inch acceptable. Outdoors, Tesla calls for watertight fittings and notes the Type 3R rating depends on the gasketed washers being used. In Ogden Valley, the spot should also be clear of roof snow and plow piles; see outdoor EV charger installation.
Each conductor is landed and torqued to 50 inch-pounds with a torque driver. Under-torqued terminals are a known cause of heat and arcing, which is why Tesla's fault table sends electricians back to check torque when the unit reports high temperature.

How is a Wall Connector commissioned?
After power-up, we open Tesla One, Tesla's installer app, and scan the QR code on the Quick Start Guide. In Installation Settings we choose the country and enter the breaker size, which sets the maximum output. Then we connect the unit to your Wi-Fi, run software updates and clear any alerts.
Commissioning is not optional. Until the breaker size is entered, Tesla One shows an "Installation settings not configured" alert. After the next power-up, green lights on the faceplate show the programmed breaker size for ten seconds, which is an easy check for you afterward. Optional settings include access control, for example limiting charging to authorized Teslas, which you can also manage in the Tesla app.
Wi-Fi details trip people up: Tesla's manuals say the unit supports only password-protected WPA2 networks on 2.4 GHz. Have your network name and password ready on install day.
How is power sharing wired for two Wall Connectors?
Each Wall Connector gets its own branch circuit of up to 60 amps, from the main panel or a subpanel. The units link over Wi-Fi in a group of up to six, one leader plus followers, and the installer sets a network limit: the total current all units together may draw, which the electrician must confirm the panel can support.
Tesla recommends line of sight between units, though it is not required. Once paired, the group has to be enabled, or none of the units will charge. The Universal Wall Connector also supports daisy chaining several units on one 60 amp circuit, limited to 48 amps combined; Tesla says the Gen 3 does not currently support that. When a panel is tight, see EV charger load management for other options.
Permit and inspection
A new Wall Connector circuit is permitted electrical work. Ogden City lists a permit as required to "Alter, Change, Extend, Install, Repair, Replace" an electrical system, and South Ogden and North Ogden issue their own electrical permits. Ogden Valley City asks for an electrical diagram, the manufacturer's specifications and the project valuation.
We apply for the permit and schedule the inspection. Tesla One asks installers who are not Tesla Certified Installers to register the unit as "Unknown." Ogden EV Charger Pros does not claim Tesla Certified Installer status; if certification matters to you, check Tesla's installer finder. Keep the invoice for Tesla's warranty. City-by-city steps are in our EV charger permits guide.
Tesla Wall Connector installation questions
How high should a Tesla Wall Connector be mounted?
Tesla's manuals recommend about 45 inches. The maximum is 60 inches indoors or outdoors, and the minimum is 18 inches indoors and 24 inches outdoors. Within that range, the right spot is where the 24 foot cable reaches the charge port without strain and the handle docks easily.
Does a Tesla Wall Connector need a GFCI breaker or a disconnect switch?
No to both, per Tesla. The Gen 3 has ground-fault protection built in, and Tesla's 2020 Gen 3 manual says not to install a GFCI breaker ahead of it. The current manuals say external disconnect switches are neither required nor recommended. A standard two-pole breaker sized to the output is the norm.
Why does the Wall Connector need Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi delivers firmware updates and remote diagnostics, and it carries power sharing between units. Tesla's manuals say the Wall Connector supports only password-protected WPA2 networks on 2.4 GHz. It still charges without Wi-Fi, but it misses updates, and a power sharing group depends on the units reaching each other.
Can I reuse my old Gen 2 Wall Connector circuit?
Often. A Gen 2 on a 60 amp circuit can usually be replaced by a Gen 3 on the same circuit if the wire is rated for it. The difference is setup: Gen 2 used an internal rotary switch, while the Gen 3 is set in the Tesla One app. See our EV charger replacement page.
