From Autel's AC Elite Home spec sheet dated March 2024 and its U.S. store, checked October 4, 2026. The 50 amp in-body holster model showed as sold out that day.
Autel's installation manual on its store is an older file under the earlier "MaxiCharger AC Wallbox Home" name and lists the cable as 24.6 feet; the spec sheet and store say 25. For other brands, see our home EV charger comparison.
Which version fits your garage?
Start with the circuit. If you want more than 40 amps, or the charger will hang outside, the 50 amp hardwired model is the one to buy. If you want a plug-in unit, choose the plug that matches the outlet you have or will add. The manual lists the input as three wires, L1, L2 and ground with no neutral, so the 14-50 and 6-50 versions charge the same; a 6-50 receptacle simply has no neutral terminal.
The holster choice is about layout. The separate holster mounts on its own, so the cable can hang where it will not be under tension. The in-body holster keeps everything in one unit, and the manual's optional Tesla port-opening feature is offered only on that style.
What breaker sizes does the MaxiCharger accept?
From 20 to 70 amps, set with a rotary switch inside the unit. Each position gives 80 percent of the breaker as charging current, up to the model's limit: 40 amps on the 40 amp model, 50 on the 50 amp model. Plug-in installs are limited to 40 and 50 amp circuits; the 70 amp, 50 amp-output setting is hardwired only.
| Switch position | Charging current | Breaker |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 16 A | 20 A |
| 2 | 24 A | 30 A |
| 3 | 32 A | 40 A |
| 4 | 40 A | 50 A |
| 5 | 48 A (50 A model) | 60 A |
| 6 | 50 A (50 A model) | 70 A |
From Autel's installation manual. Positions 0, 7, 8 and 9 are marked "Not in Use," and the manual notes the unit still runs at 16 or 50 amps in them, so the switch must be set deliberately.
That note is worth taking seriously: a switch left at 7, 8 or 9 on a 50 amp model allows 50 amps regardless of the breaker. The app can then trim the output further, down to 6 amps. When the current is set below the model's rating, Autel supplies amperage labels to cover the original. The field terminal takes copper wire up to 6 AWG. General rules are in what size breaker for an EV charger.
What does Autel say about GFCI breakers?
Autel's manual asks for a new, dedicated, non-GFCI two-pole breaker "in accordance with local codes and ordinances." For a hardwired unit in Ogden that works. For a plug-in unit it does not, because Utah's adopted 2023 NEC requires GFCI protection on receptacles installed for EV charging. Hardwiring the 50 amp model avoids the conflict.
Utah removed some GFCI rules for general 240 volt outlets, but left NEC 625.54, the EV receptacle rule, in place. So a 14-50 or 6-50 added for an Autel still gets GFCI protection, even though the charger has its own 20 mA ground-fault detection. If that combination trips, see EV charger keeps tripping the breaker and hardwired vs NEMA 14-50.
Mounting, cold and connectivity
Autel recommends mounting the charger 51 to 67 inches high, with a plug-in outlet at least 18 inches off the floor beside it. It can also go on a floor pedestal. The -40°F low end of its operating range is the widest in our charger comparison, which gives margin on an exterior wall in Eden or Ogden Valley. Autel recommends the hardwired version outdoors. Placement for snow and plows is covered in outdoor EV charger installation.
Ethernet is unusual on a home charger and useful in a detached garage that Wi-Fi does not reach. The RS485 port is for an energy meter connection, and the spec sheet lists OpenADR 2.0b certification alongside Energy Star. Autel's manual describes an optional feature that opens a Tesla's charge port, offered only on in-body holster models, but every current U.S. model has a J1772 handle, so a NACS car needs an adapter rated for Level 2 AC charging.
Installation notes
Autel's manual says the charger "should only be installed by a licensed electrician in accordance with all local codes and ordinances." A 50 amp unit on a 70 amp circuit counts as 12 kW in a load calculation, so on a busy panel a lower switch position, or EV charger load management, can be the better answer than a panel upgrade. Ogden permit steps are on EV charger permits in Ogden. If you already bought an Autel, we can install the unit you supply.
Autel MaxiCharger questions
What breaker does the Autel MaxiCharger 50A need?
A 70 amp two-pole breaker for the full 50 amps, and that setting is hardwired only. Autel's manual lists rotary switch settings for 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 amp breakers, each giving 80 percent of the breaker as charging current. The 40 amp plug-in model runs on a 40 or 50 amp circuit.
Does Autel make a NACS home charger?
Not in its current U.S. home lineup. All six AC Elite Home models on Autel Energy's U.S. store use a J1772 connector. Autel's manual lists an optional feature that opens a Tesla's charge port, available only on chargers with the built-in holster.
Can the Autel MaxiCharger go outside?
Yes. It has a NEMA 4 enclosure and Autel's spec sheet rates it to operate from -40°F to 131°F, a wider range than most home chargers. Autel recommends the hardwired version for outdoor installation.
Does Autel require a licensed electrician?
Autel's installation manual says the charger should only be installed by a licensed electrician in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.
