Which Rivian Wall Charger do I need?
Match the charger to your Rivian's charge port. The J1772 version is for 2022 to 2025 R1T and R1S, which have a CCS1 port. The NACS version is for 2026 and later Rivians, including the R2. Both sell for $800 on Rivian's Gear Shop as of October 4, 2026, and both deliver 48 amps (11.5 kW).
| Version | Fits | Rivian part number |
|---|---|---|
| Wall Charger, J1772 | 2022 to 2025 R1T and R1S (CCS1 port) | PT00057325 |
| Wall Charger, NACS | 2026 and later Rivian vehicles | PT01314089 |
The adapters only work one way. Rivian's J1772 AC Adapter lets a 2026 or later Rivian charge from a J1772 charger, so a J1772 Wall Charger can serve both generations. Rivian says the NACS Wall Charger "is not compatible with a J1772 port without a separate adapter," and its Gear Shop lists no AC adapter in that direction. If you have a 2022 to 2025 R1, or might keep one, the J1772 unit is the safer buy. Model details are on our Rivian home charging guide.
What are the Rivian Wall Charger specs?
Rivian lists 48 amps maximum, 11.5 kW, single phase 240 volt input, a 24 foot cord, Wi-Fi and ENERGY STAR certification for both versions. Its installation guide adds a NEMA Type 3R enclosure, an operating range of -22°F to 122°F and built-in CCID20 ground-fault protection. Rivian quotes up to 25 miles of range per hour for an R1.
| Spec | Rivian figure |
|---|---|
| Output | 48 A max, 11.5 kW |
| Input | 208/240 V AC, single phase |
| Cord | 24 ft (product page); 25 ft in the 2022 guide |
| Connection | Hard-wired |
| Enclosure | NEMA Type 3R, IK8 impact rating |
| Operating temperature | -22°F to 122°F |
| Ground fault | CCID20 (stops charging above 20 mA leakage) |
| Connectivity | 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet port |
| Weight | 24.25 lb with cable |
Output, cord and Wi-Fi are from Rivian's Gear Shop pages for both versions. The other rows are from Rivian's July 2022 installation guide for the J1772 unit (PT00057325). For the NACS unit, confirm these rows in Rivian's installation guide for that version.
Is the Rivian Wall Charger hardwired only?
Yes. Rivian says it "designed the Rivian Wall Charger for hardwire installation by a licensed electrician, to enable optimal charging speeds," and the guide lists the wiring type as "Hard-wired." It does not ship with a plug. If you want to plug in, Rivian's Portable Charger runs from a NEMA 14-50 at up to 32 amps (7.6 kW).
Hardwiring also keeps the GFCI question simple. Rivian "does not recommend using a GFCI breaker" because the unit's CCID20 protection plus a GFCI breaker "can cause nuisance tripping." NEC 625.54 requires GFCI protection for receptacles installed for EV charging, not for hardwired equipment. See hardwired vs NEMA 14-50 and hardwired EV charger installation.
What breaker and wire does it need?
A 60 amp breaker and 6 AWG copper for the full 48 amps. Rivian's guide says to connect "only to a circuit provided with no more than 60 amperes" of protection. Lower outputs are set with three dip switches inside the unit, so a smaller panel can still take a Rivian Wall Charger at reduced speed.
| Output setting | Breaker | Typical copper conductor |
|---|---|---|
| 48 A (default) | 60 A | 6 AWG |
| 40 A | 50 A | 8 AWG |
| 32 A | 40 A | 8 AWG |
| 24 A | 30 A | 10 AWG |
| 16 A | 20 A | 12 to 10 AWG |
| 12 A | 15 A | 12 to 14 AWG |
From the dip switch table in Rivian's 2022 guide, which also lists 20 A and 6 A settings. Rivian bases conductor sizes on the NEC 90°C column and allows copper only, #14 to #6 AWG. Your installer sizes the actual wire for the run and terminations.
At 48 amps the unit is under the 60 amp threshold that triggers the NEC 625.43 disconnect rule. Rivian's troubleshooting steps for a solid red light include checking that the dip switches match the breaker. Breaker sizing is covered in what size breaker for an EV charger.
Where should the Wall Charger be mounted?
Rivian's guide asks for at least 18 inches from floor to the bottom of the unit indoors and 24 inches outdoors, about chest height for ease of use, and at least 12 inches clear on the right side for the connector dock. Outdoors, conduit enters through the bottom only.
The NEMA 3R enclosure and -22°F rating make an exterior wall workable, which matters for a driveway in Eden or a detached garage. Keep it out of roof snow-shed and plow piles. Rivian says not to extend the charging cable, so mount within reach of the charge port. More in outdoor EV charger installation and EV charger installation in Eden.

What does Rivian's warranty require from the installer?
Rivian gives the Wall Charger a 4 year warranty from the date of purchase, covering parts and labor for defects. To keep that coverage, Rivian says "any installation of the Rivian Wall Charger must be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with local codes and standards." Rivian points owners to Qmerit and Treehouse to find one.
Whoever you hire, check their license on the Utah DOPL licensee lookup and keep the invoice. We can install a Rivian Wall Charger you have already bought. Permits are covered in EV charger permits in Ogden.
After the install, the owner pairs the unit in the Rivian app (Account, Add gear, Wall Charger) over Bluetooth, then joins it to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network for firmware updates. Rivian notes a unit links to only one Rivian account.
Panel and load notes
Under the 2023 NEC, a load calculation counts an EV charger at 7,200 watts or its nameplate, whichever is larger, so a 48 amp Rivian unit counts as about 11.5 kW. If the panel is tight, the options are a lower dip switch setting, an energy management system (NEC 220.70 lets the calculation use its setpoint), or a panel upgrade. We look at load management before a panel upgrade comes up. See EV charger load management and the installation cost guide.
Rivian Wall Charger questions
Can the Rivian Wall Charger plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet?
No. Rivian says it designed the Wall Charger for hardwire installation by a licensed electrician, and its installation guide lists the wiring type as hard-wired. For a plug-in setup, Rivian's Portable Charger runs from a NEMA 14-50 outlet at up to 32 amps.
Will the NACS Wall Charger work on my 2023 R1T?
Not on its own. Rivian says the NACS Wall Charger is not compatible with a J1772 port without a separate adapter, and the AC adapter Rivian sells goes the other way (J1772 charger to NACS car). A 2022 to 2025 R1T or R1S should get the J1772 Wall Charger.
What breaker does the Rivian Wall Charger need?
A 60 amp breaker for the full 48 amps, with 6 AWG copper. Rivian's guide lets the installer set lower outputs with dip switches inside the unit, for example 40 amps on a 50 amp breaker or 32 amps on a 40 amp breaker.
Do I need a GFCI breaker for a Rivian Wall Charger?
Rivian recommends against one. Its guide says the Wall Charger has built-in CCID20 protection and that a GFCI breaker in the panel can cause nuisance tripping. The NEC's EV GFCI rule (625.54) covers receptacles, not hardwired chargers.
Does the installer affect the Rivian warranty?
Yes. Rivian gives the Wall Charger a 4 year warranty from purchase and says any installation must be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with local codes and standards to keep coverage. Keep your invoice and permit record.
